I am a ‘Capitalist Tool.’ Jon Bannenberg wore the tie; the name came off an American corporate aircraft he drew. That frankness stuck with me. I began as an apprentice at a Chicago toy company that made Lincoln Logs. From there I went to San Rafael to draw at Industrial Light & Magic, then to Turin and the studio of my hero, Tom Tjaarda. The industrial-design degree came later. Ron Holland in Ireland gave me the first real job and the introduction that led to seven years drawing by hand in Jon Bannenberg’s London studio. Everything of lasting value I learned on the job, and more from the craftsmen who built what I sketched. That is the only education I trust. I remain a useful tool for a very few people who can afford to turn a private vision into something that actually floats.
